Introduction

  Institute for Civil Society Development (hereinafter referred to as “ICSD”£©of Zhejiang University was established in September,2006 focusing on the study and promotion of the development of civil society in China. The Executive Direct is Professor Yu Jianxing.

The Yangtze River Delta in which Zhejiang province lies is the most developed area of private economy in China. With the boosting of the private economy in this area a variety of NGOs including industrial associations emerged and played a rising important role in the modernization of the economy and society. The boom of the industrial associations as thus becomes a significant phenomenon in Yangtze River Delta and Zhejiang province especially and presents unique characteristics of its organizational structure and function in the contexts of the transaction of China. ICSD will take advantage of the local resources to find the contribution factors affect the development of industrial associations and explore the effect of the various industrial associations in improving the market mechanisms and promoting the interaction between the government and enterprises thus provide consultation and training services to the government¡¢chambers and industrial associations and expand the academic repute in this field though project co-operation¡¢academic visits, forums ¡¢website and other means.

Our mission

ICSD is committed to play an active role in the following aspects:

1. Exerting interdisciplinary predominance, and accelerating elevation of research. ICSD will allure scholars from relevant colleges of Zhejiang University (politics and public administration, sociology, law, economics, International Studies, journalism, pedagogics, euthenics and history, etc.) and other colleges in Hangzhou, both of whom are in the same camp about civil society and NGOs research. After establishment of ICSD, internal communion and cooperation will be strengthened, and cut-in of multi-vision, impact of diversified subjects, and interdisciplinary predominance will be outstanding inevitably.

2. Integrating resources, and optimizing the efficiency of resources using. After establishment of ICSD, primary resources of scholars, including administrative resource, researchful resource, and information can be incorporated comprehensively and shared, and all of those can reduce resource waste of duplication of similative, to improve the efficiency both in the work and research.

3. Extending intercommunion domestic and abroad, strengthening academic influence incessantly. ICSD will served as unitive window and platform to for external communion in the field of civil society, Zhejiang University, to create opportunities to establish mutual affection between scholars in ICSD and academe domestic and abroad, government and enterprises, by Website, project cooperation, common research, academic interview, academic forum, policy consultation and training, etc. we can promote extensive external cooperation, and expand the academic influence of Zhejiang University in this field.

 4. Ascertaining academic direction, intensifying academic characteristic. Zhejiang Province and The Yangtze River Delta have been most developed area of private economy in China. During the process of development, a great variety of spontaneous NGO has played an important role, and become a significant phenomenon of economy and society. Their characteristic institutional background, organization and function make different from common NGO. The difference among NGO Research Center, Tsinghua University and Database for Civil Society Studies, Pekin University is that their research focus on the impact NGO made on governance, while our research probes into positive influence that all sorts of industrial associations and civilian chambers make of consummating market mechanism and accelerating the mutual affection between government and enterprises by making use of local resources of Zhejiang Province and The Yangtze River Delta, which can complement with the research of private economics and regional economics in Zhejiang University.
